A cosa serve l’arte? O meglio ancora quella disciplina che si definisce storia dell’arte, e rischia di vivere rinchiusa nelle stanze di un museo, all’ombra di una chiesa o nei cassetti di un archivio della memoria. Nelle pagine di un codice miniato, nella pellicola di una foto in bianco e nero, nella delicata fattura di un pavimento o nell’inferriata di
un terrazzo. L’arte risiede negli occhi di chi guarda e riconosce un soffio di bellezza, anche in un edificio che sta crollando o negli scheletri di una zona industriale in rovina. Molto semplicemente, l’arte è quel dono misterioso di raffigurare, descrivere e tradurre in immagini una storia, tante storie.
La giovane donna corpulenta e ingioiellata che regge la testa mozzata di un uomo si chiama Giuditta, l’eroina che ha liberato il popolo ebreo. E il tizio con la barba che attraversa il mare portando sulle spalle un bambino è San Cristoforo. Il suo nome significa “portatore di Cristo”. Ogni personaggio dipinto nei quadri ha un passato, un vissuto, e noi impariamo a riconoscere questa storia e a raccontarla. A differenza degli umani, i santi e i personaggi del mito sono accompagnati da alcuni segni distintivi, perché la loro presenza doveva essere riconoscibile e trasmettere un messaggio virtuoso, un ammonimento o una protezione dalle intemperie e dai pericoli. Anche gli animali, le piante e i fiori pertanto hanno un preciso significato simbolico, e non sono una presenza casuale come potremmo immaginare. Esiste un dipinto con un bellissimo rospo dipinto a pancia in su, riposto accanto a un personaggio alato con mantello rosso: l’animale rappresenta il Male sconfitto da San Michele arcangelo. Per chi crede e chi non crede, l’arte è comunque manifestazione di bellezza. Qualcuno di noi è stato toccato da questa bellezza, e ha avuto il dono di trasmetterla agli altri.
Cosa si prova di fronte a un’opera d’arte? Se siamo fortunati, una sorta di innamoramento. Manca il respiro, i battiti accelerano, si chiude lo stomaco e si sente una vibrazione. L’effetto amplificato che può procurare l’ascolto della musica, o la lettura di una poesia. Il rapporto che si instaura con l’opera d’arte è del tutto gratuito, istantaneo, magico. L’arte parla un linguaggio che trasmette emozioni. Non c’è altro modo per dirlo. Allena i sensi, insegna a guardare i dettagli, a ricercare un profilo perduto, a soffermarsi sul passaggio dalla luce all’ombra, a dialogare con qualcuno che non c’è più, ma che è rimasto miracolosamente vivo. Impariamo a familiarizzarci con la materia che prende forma, resta a uno stato di abbozzo o viene plasmata fino a diventare morbida e levigata. Pittura, terracotta, marmo, pietra, smalto, argento, vetro, e molto altro.
Eppure qualcuno pensa ancora che l’arte sia una cosa per pochi eletti. Qualcosa in più a cui si può rinunciare. Falso, terribilmente falso. Siamo molto più poveri senza l’arte, e in senso lato senza la cultura. L’amore per l’arte della natura ci fa sentire abitanti del pianeta, ci sensibilizza sulle tematiche ambientali, e sull’uso indiscriminato che qualcuno fa del paesaggio. Tanto per fare un esempio.
Se siamo costantemente a contatto con la bellezza, potremo a nostra volta farci portatori di bellezza, e indicare agli altri un nuovo modo di guardare la realtà. Se la mente e l’anima sono educate alla contemplazione delle immagini dell’arte, sorge spontaneamente una percezione alla sensibilità che diviene essenziale nella vita di tutti i giorni. Bastano pochi istanti, anche senza guardare, anche a grande distanza, per individuare una geometria degli sguardi, un linguaggio dei gesti e delle parole dette e non dette. Possiamo attribuire ai colori nomi e sfumature infinite. Possiamo memorizzare le fossette di un sorriso, o il cangiantismo del colore degli occhi anche ad un primo incontro, grazie alle infinite possibilità che offre un’osservazione acuta e consapevole.
Pertanto, l’arte qualche volta ci aiuta a sopravvivere alle “brutture” del quotidiano. Molto più spesso c’insegna a vivere in comunione con noi stessi e con gli altri. Scusate, vi sembra poco?
